Punycode converter for domain names and email addresses
Domain names with accents or non-Latin letters, such as bücher.de, are stored by computers in a plain-letter form that starts with xn--. That form is called Punycode. The tool below converts in both directions.
Examples
| Unicode form | Punycode form |
|---|---|
bücher.de | xn--bcher-kva.de |
mañana.com | xn--maana-pta.com |
例え.jp | xn--r8jz45g.jp |
sam@münchen.de | sam@xn--mnchen-3ya.de |
When you need Punycode
- Setting up DNS: many DNS dashboards only accept the
xn--form. - Entering an email address: many websites reject accented characters in email addresses. The Punycode form of the domain is usually accepted.
- Checking suspicious links: scammers can use characters that look like Latin letters to imitate a familiar domain. Converting to Punycode reveals that it is a completely different domain.
Only the domain part (after the @) is converted. The name before the @ stays as it is, and most email services only accept plain characters there.
